Welcome to the CMS Unix website

On the following pages you will find information regarding the services and facilities provided by the University of Greenwich's CMS Unix Team as well as help files and tutorials covering many of the systems, packages and applications that are supported on the CMS Unix systems.

Email Housekeeping

IMPORTANT information is sent to your university email address and this account should be checked on a regular basis, failure to do this will build up a back log of mail and possibly result in new emails not being received or LOSS of old emails.

Your email INBOX is responsible for receiving all email deliveries sent to your email address. The INBOX is scanned on a regular basis to check for new mail, mail marked for deleting and other updates. To ensure that these INBOX operations are as quick and efficient as possible please perform regular email housekeeping, ie delete/purge all un-required emails and file any important emails into email folders. Performing regular housekeeping on your INBOX will help ensure better email performance. The recommended maximum size of your Inbox is 200Mb.
(A new faster backend is being developed which will deal more efficiently with very large mail folders. However the best approach will always be to perform regular email housekeeping.).

Developing code on your own machine

If you are developing code on your own machine but will be demonstrating it on university servers, ensure that you test it on university servers well in advance of your demonstration.

Do not wait until the last moment.

Not all servers will run the same versions of software and if you wait until the last moment then it might be too late to get anything done in time.
