Requests For Help

Below you will find some helpful instruction on how to formulate requests for help from the computing support staff. It is essential that you follow the procedures described below as, if a question is asked correctly with all the relevant details attached, it is much easier to respond with the correct fixes to the problem in question.

Before asking a technical question by email do the following:
  1. Try to find an answer by searching the CMS Unix website
  2. Try to find an answer by looking in the CMS Unix FAQ's
  3. Try to find an answer by searching the Web.
  4. Try to find an answer by reading the manual.
  5. Try to find an answer by reading a FAQ.
  6. Try to find an answer by inspection or experimentation.
If after following these steps, you still cannot find the answer to your question, then when composing your email, please include your name and user id along with clearly stating what the exact problem you are having is.

Here is some helpful information to include in your email:
  • Whether the command/procedure worked previously
  • Things you have tried to get it to work
  • Any error messages output from the command you are trying to run.
  • The name of the host you are logged into at the time.

Here are some examples of good and bad emails to send:

Subject: HELP! BAD EMAIL
My program doesn't work. Can you fix it!

Subject: URGENT! BAD EMAIL
I cant log into Unix!

Subject: [userid: bm999] Cant log into Unix using Exceed in King William GOOD EMAIL
Hi,
I am trying to use the Exceed program in the King William labs, however, i dont seem to be able to log in to Unix with it. I can log into Unix using the web login method at http://student.cms.gre.ac.uk/login however, when i use Exceed, the shell window appears then immediately dissappears again.
Thanks for your help.
