Editors

NEdit

NEdit is one of the text editors you can use to create files in an X Windows environment. It works like a simple word processor but does not have any formatting features (such as fonts or character styles).

Textedit

Textedit is another text editor you can use to create files in an X Windows environment. It is very simple with a few basic options for find and replacing text.

Jed

Jed is a modeless editor which means that you do not have to be in different modes to edit or insert text. Jed is also very easy to use and offers a range of facilities which include: Colour syntax highlighting, special features activated on the basis of file type and Extensibility via the C-like S language. This can be used over a modem or on a computer without X Windows.

XJed

XJed allows Jed to run in its own terminal window and adds some functionalities such as better copy and paste with the mouse.

GNU Nano

GNU Nano is one of the line-mode text editors you can use to create files, reports and letters and source code documents. You will need a line-mode editor if you use your account via a modem or on a non-X Windows computer such as Microsoft Windows.

Emacs

Emacs is a powerful editor which contains very good syntax highlighting for most popular file formats (C, java, php. perl. HTML, XML ...)

Bluefish

Bluefish is a GTK HTML editor providing web designers or programmers with a very powerful site creating environment. Containing a "A What You See Is What You Need interface" and Syntax highlighting.

Vi

The vi program is a full-screen text editor that can almost certainly be found on all UNIX systems. vi does not use a large amount of system resources and yet it is very powerful. NOTE: This is one of the most difficult editors to get to grips with initially. If you are new to Unix, you are advised to use Jed/Xjed or NEdit.
